The significance of the tourism industry in Seychelles is remarkable to most, considering that it is one of the main pillars of the Seychelles economy. Whilst the outbreak of the COVID-19 came near to paralyzing global tourism, it is refreshing to see that tourism in Seychelles, being a resilient sector, is slowly bouncing back.

As the newly appointed Minister responsible for the tourism portfolio, I stand determined in supporting the recovery of tourism in Seychelles. More than ever, the tourism industry in Seychelles will be operating within a competitive environment. It is my aim therefore to apply a new perspective on tourism development with strong emphasis placed on quality products that reflect value for money. The need to re-evaluate product and pricing strategies will be core to the successful development and progression of tourism.

Faced with the pandemic and within this new landscape, it is imperative that we reinvigorate our tourism sector in order to provide future visitors with new experiences. Let us strive for innovation and diversification in order to build a sustainable tourism industry. It is important to not only rely on the ‘sun, sea and sand’ experience but also start laying foundations for future offerings of diverse touristic experience.

Additionally, bringing tourists at the heart of the community to experience an authentic cultural exchange should become one of our key focus. It is my vision to advocate for the establishment of relevant platforms necessary for the facilitation of community-based tourism in order to promote authentic experiences and celebrate our traditions.

As human resource remains a challenge, the Seychelles Tourism Academy shall play a key role in ensuring that trainings provided are in line with the current needs of the industry. Gaps must be identified to ensure that courses are not only relevant but attract the right candidates – that is, those with a passion for tourism.

To conclude, willingness and commitment of the private sector remains vital should we want to take this industry to greater heights. I look forward to engaging with all relevant stakeholders across all sectors so as to further strengthen collaboration thereby boosting the recovery of the tourism sector.
